Configure asset characteristics | OverIT Knowledge Hub

Audience: Administrators, dispatchers

Characteristics are the specific data points or attributes of an asset. For example, some characteristics of a “Wire” asset could be "Maximum voltage", "Weight", or "Color".

Prerequisites

Before you start:

To structure assets, see Structure asset data.
To configure a characteristics class, see Configure asset characteristics classes.

Follow the UI path

All following instructions start from this system path:

Configuration > Core > Additional Parameters > Characteristics > Characteristics

Add a new characteristic

To create an attribute that can categorize assets:

Go to the Characteristics page.
Click the + New characteristic button.
Enter the required and optional information.

Click Save.

Modify a characteristic

To change a characteristic of an asset:

On the Characteristics page, in the Search tab, enter desired parameters.
Click Search.
In the Characteristics list, click a characteristic.
In the Modify feature tab, edit the characteristic’s information.

Click Save.

Understand characteristic parameters

Important: Some fields are only visible or mandatory under specific conditions.

To add or modify a characteristic, enter this information:

Field	Required	Description
Class	Yes	The specific characteristic class this item belongs to.
Type	Yes	How the application handles this characteristic: Measures: Can only be associated with "Measuring elements". Object attributes: Can only be associated with technical assets. Both: Can be associated with both.
Code	No	The characteristic's unique internal code.
Description	Yes	The characteristic's description.
Value type	Yes	The strictly enforced type of the characteristic: Text Number Value Selection Measures: Number Decimal number Note: When you choose a type, all other types are blocked.
Input box dimension	Sometimes	The width/size of the data entry box in the interface.
Drop down list	Visible and mandatory if Value Type is Value Selection.	The specific list of options available in the dropdown menu.
Positions number	Editable and mandatory if the value type is “Number” or “Decimal number”.	The maximum number of total digits allowed (integers + decimals).
Decimal number	Editable and mandatory if the value type is “Decimal number”.	The maximum number of decimal places allowed.
Sorting	No	The characteristic’s order in dropdown menus.
Unit of measurements	Editable if the value type is “Number” or “Decimal number”. Mandatory if type is “Measures”.	The asset’s unit of measurement, such as: Celsius Kilograms Volts PSI
Meter	No	Flags the characteristic for specific meter-reading operational logic.
Icon	No	A visual identifier next to the characteristic in measurement and asset views.
