The goal of a Scenario Planning for Infrastructure module in a GIS platform is to offer a structured and controlled environment for creating, modifying, comparing, and sharing variations of geospatial data within predefined Areas of Interest (AOIs).
This capability is essential for complex decision-making processes requiring the evaluation of multiple design alternatives, such as infrastructure planning, environmental impact analysis, or submarine network modeling.
Conceptual Hierarchy: Separation of Responsibilities for Greater Clarity
The conceptual backbone of the module is its three-level hierarchical structure, designed to organize work logically and intuitively, separating the different dimensions of a scenario analysis.
-
Scenario: Represents the highest-level logical container. It defines the general theme or program within which activities take place, such as "North-East Electrical Network Development" or "Submarine Cable Laying Planning." It acts as an aggregator for a set of related initiatives, providing a unifying strategic context.
-
Simulation: Constitutes the specific territorial instance within a Scenario. Each Simulation is defined by a precise geographical Area of Interest (AOI), which serves as the operational boundary for all modification and analysis activities. The choice to define the AOI at this level is a key design point: it ensures that all underlying variants operate within the same geographical perimeter, making their comparisons homogeneous and meaningful.
-
Hypothesis: Is the single project variant within a Simulation. Each Hypothesis represents a specific "what-if," a possible solution to a design problem. It automatically inherits the AOI from the parent Simulation, allowing users to focus exclusively on the variation of geospatial data within it.
