Audience: Administrators
In a GIS platform, you need to divide a geographic territory into specific zones, to analyze, edit information of different access levels, services, or maps. Even if a service provides data and information on more zones, users who only work on a sub-set of zones should only access data relevant to them. To help users access the data that they need, territories are divided into a hierarchy. The upper-level zones are named “Structures” and each zone has lower-level sub-zones named “Operation centers”.
Since it isn't possible to belong to more than one hierarchy, areas allow operators to temporarily see data in a location they don’t normally work in. For example, an operator may work on the Novara zone, but temporarily is needed in Milan too. While the operator can’t be assigned to the Novara and Milan zone because it's a different structure, it is possible to create the area “North-Center Italy” and assign it to the operator. When they log in, the user only sees data on a portion of the map allowed by zones' permissions.
