Manage thematic maps

Audience: Administrators

Manage what a thematic map can define, make a thematic map available to all service users, and set the default thematic map applied when a service loads.

Prerequisites

Before you start:

  • Ensure you have access to the service and administrative rights to configure thematic maps.

  • Ensure the target service has pre-configured symbology or clustering requirements.

Understand thematic map content

A thematic map defines how service features render on the map. It can contain:

Content type

Description

Symbology only

Defines the renderer applied to features (for example, by status, by type, or as a heatmap).

Clustering only

Groups nearby features into a single symbol that reports total count and tooltips.

Symbology and clustering

Applies both symbology renderers and feature clustering simultaneously.

Clustering applies directly as part of the thematic map. Applying a new thematic map automatically updates or removes existing clustering to prevent display conflicts.

On feature services, clustering configurations can target a single sublayer or all compatible sublayers.

Understand public and default thematic maps

Two properties control accessibility and auto-application for thematic maps:

Property

Description

Public

Shares the thematic map with all users who have access to the service. New thematic maps are public by default.

Default

Applies the thematic map automatically when the service loads without requiring manual user selection.

Together, these properties eliminate common operational friction: a custom symbology built by one person is immediately visible to the entire team, and users no longer need to select critical service symbology by hand every time.

New thematic maps are Public by default. Clear the Public option if you want to keep a thematic map private while draft work is in progress.

Make a thematic map public

You can set public visibility while creating a thematic map or from the thematic map list.

Set visibility during creation or editing

  1. Open the Add or Edit form for the thematic map.

  2. Select the Public checkbox to share the map with all users, or clear it to keep it private.

  3. Click Save.

Set visibility from the list

  1. Open the list of thematic maps for the service.

  2. In the Public column, toggle the switch on the row of the target thematic map.

Once public, any user with access to the service can select and apply the thematic map.

Set the default thematic map

To select the thematic map that applies automatically when a service loads:

  1. Open the list of thematic maps for the service.

  2. In the Default column, select the radio button on the row of the target thematic map.

Note: A service can have only one default thematic map. Selecting a new default automatically clears the previous choice. Clear all selections if you do not want a default thematic map.

Understand service loading behavior

When a user loads a service:

  • With a default thematic map: The system automatically applies the default thematic map.

  • Without a default thematic map: The system displays the original symbology defined by the GIS service.

Users can manually switch to any available thematic map at any time.

Understand thematic map switching

When users select a thematic map from the themes widget:

  • Applying a thematic map with clustering automatically clusters the layer or its targeted sublayers.

  • Applying a thematic map without clustering removes any active clustering.

  • Restoring the service default removes custom clustering and restores the original service symbology.

The Cluster theme on the Field Execution module operations layer uses clustering thematic maps. See View work order and technical object on the map.
