Configure WMTS services

Audience: Administrators

This topic explains how to add and configure OGC Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) layers in NextGen Geo. NextGen Geo supports OGC WMTS tiled map services. The system can read a capabilities document from a WMTS URL, discover available layers, and display them using a tile matrix set aligned with the map coordinate system.

The system automatically detects both RESTful and Key-Value Pair (KVP) WMTS styles.

Prerequisites

Before you start:

  • Ensure you have the URL for the WMTS service or capabilities document (for example, WMTSCapabilities.xml).

  • Ensure the target WMTS service uses a projection coordinate system compatible with your map view.

  • Ensure you are assigned to the Configurator group to access Control Panel service settings.

Add a WMTS service

You can add a WMTS service directly through the UI or via service configuration.

Add a WMTS service by URL

  1. In the map toolbar, open the Add service panel.

  2. In the URL field, paste the WMTS capabilities endpoint (for example, WMTSCapabilities.xml) or the base service URL. The system automatically detects the service type as WMTS Layer.

  3. Click Confirm.

Add a WMTS service from service configuration

  1. Navigate to Control Panel > Maps > Service.

  2. Click Add service or edit an existing service.

  3. In the URL field, paste the WMTS URL. The system automatically selects WMTS Layer as the service type.

  4. Optional: In the Service data field, enter a JSON configuration object to customize behavior.

  5. Click Save. The system validates the URL by connecting to the remote WMTS service.

Select layers in the Table of Contents

A WMTS service can expose multiple layers, but only one layer displays on the map at a time.

In the Table of Contents (TOC):

  • WMTS layers appear in a single-choice list.

  • Selecting a layer displays it on the map and deselects the previously active layer.

  • Clearing the selection hides the service.

Configure service data options

Enter a JSON object in the Service data field on the service configuration page to override or restrict default WMTS behavior.

Key

Description

layers

Restricts available layers to a specific list of identifiers (provided as a comma-separated string or array).

identifier

Defines the default layer displayed when the service opens.

tileMatrixSet

Forces a specific tile matrix set.

format

Forces an output image format (for example, image/png).

style

Forces a specific WMTS style.

serviceMode

Forces either RESTful or KVP mode instead of automatic detection.

Example configuration:

JSON
JSON
{
  "layers": "WB_2024_R00,WB_2024_R03,WB_2024_R07,WB_2024_R11,WB_2025_R01,WB_2025_R04,WB_2025_R07,WB_2025_R10,WB_2026_R01,WB_2026_R04,WB_2026_R06",
  "identifier": "WB_2024_R00"
}

System limitations

  • Single-layer display: You can only display one WMTS layer at a time per service.

  • Coordinate system alignment: The map and WMTS tiles must use compatible projection systems.

  • Feature info: GetFeatureInfo requests for feature identification are not supported.

  • Interface support: WMTS services are currently supported on the desktop Classic interface.
