Audience: Administrators, Dispatchers, Field operators
Understand how to create a work order (WO) and its associated operations from the map using the multi-step creation wizard in the Field Execution module.
Prerequisites
Before you start:
-
Ensure an administrator has configured the Field Execution module (see Configure the Field Execution module).
-
Ensure you have permission to create work orders. If your account lacks permission, the module displays the message:
Your user cannot create work orders. -
Review how technical objects and operations display on the map (see View work orders and technical objects on the map).
Understand the creation wizard
The creation wizard guides you through three sequential steps:
-
Technical object selection: Locate and select the target asset on the map.
-
Work Order Details: Enter scheduling, administrative, and descriptive data for the work order.
-
Operations: Define the sequence of activity cards that make up the overall work order.
Note: Values entered across steps are preserved during navigation. Data is sent to NextGen FSM only after final validation when saving.
Step 1: Select the technical object
-
In the Field Execution module, click New Work Order.
-
Activate map-based spatial search to locate assets in your target area.
Note: Spatial search executes exclusively against the FSM Technical Objects layer to prevent interference from other map layers.
-
In the search results grid, review the retrieved technical objects.
-
Optional: Click Zoom to next to a listed asset to center the map view on its geometry.
-
Select one technical object from the list. The wizard automatically advances to the Work Order Details step.
Note: Every work order must be bound to exactly one technical object.
Step 2: Enter work order details
In the Work Order Details step, fill in the work order parameters:
|
Field |
Mandatory |
Description |
|
Technical object |
No |
Read-only field displaying the asset selected in Step 1. |
|
Work Order Type |
Yes |
Select a classification type retrieved from NextGen FSM. |
|
Start Date and Time |
No |
Select the beginning of the execution window. |
|
End Date and Time |
No |
Select the end of the execution window (must be equal to or later than the start time). |
|
Duration |
No |
Enter the expected execution duration in minutes. |
|
Description |
No |
Enter a short summary of the work order. |
|
Notes |
No |
Enter freeform notes for reviewers or field technicians. |
Click Next to proceed once all mandatory fields are valid.
Step 3: Add and manage operations
The Operations step opens with one initial activity card labeled Operation 1 of 1.
-
For each operation card, fill in the required fields:
|
Field |
Mandatory |
Description |
|
Operation type |
Yes |
Select an activity type retrieved from NextGen FSM. |
|
Duration |
Yes |
Enter the operation duration in minutes. |
|
Start Date and Time |
No |
Beginning of the sub-task. If left empty, inherits the work order start time. |
|
End Date and Time |
No |
End of the sub-task. If left empty, inherits the work order end time. |
|
Description |
No |
Enter a short summary of the operation. |
|
Notes |
No |
Enter freeform operational notes. |
-
To add additional sub-tasks, click Add operation. The new card appends to the sequence and updates the Operation X of Y counter.
-
To navigate between operation cards, use the Operation X of Y drop-down list, or click Previous Operation and Next Operation.
Note: Operations maintain their insertion order and cannot be reordered manually.
Delete an operation
-
On the target operation card, click Delete.
-
In the confirmation dialog, click Confirm. The card is removed and remaining operations renumber automatically.
Note: If only one operation card remains, clicking Delete clears its field values without removing the card. Every work order requires at least one operation.
Save or discard the work order
-
Save: Click Save new work order. The system validates all fields across all operation cards. Upon success, the wizard closes and returns to the work order list. If validation fails, error messages display and your entered data remains intact.
-
Discard: Click Close in the wizard header. If unsaved data exists, confirm the dialog prompt:
You are losing unsaved creation changes. Are you sure you want to close the window?
Understand post-save sync
When saved, NextGen Geo submits a creation request to NextGen FSM and receives a generated work order code. The new work order and its assets become visible in NextGen Geo once the system processes the corresponding creation event (see Real-Time Updates and data cleanup).
