Understand work order and operation status

Work orders (WOs) and operations transition through a set of status values that identify their current lifecycle phase. The overall status of a WO combines the individual statuses of all the operations it contains.

See the operation status lifecycle

Individual operations progress in stages from creation to closure. User actions through the server and mobile app or requests from external systems trigger status changes like:

Status

Description

Trigger / next action

Open

The operation requires manual validation by the planner before it can be scheduled.

The planner validates the operation to make it schedulable.

Schedulable

The operation is available and ready for scheduling. Note: This can be set as the default creation status for specific WO types, bypassing the "Open" state.

The planner assigns the operation to a resource.

Scheduled

The operation is assigned to a resource on the daily plan, but needs validation before it is sent to the mobile device.

The planner validates the whole day for the resource or operations center (OC).

Fixed

The planner validated the scheduling.

The system synchronizes the data to the mobile device.

Submitted

The operation successfully synchronized and is available on the technician's mobile device.

The technician takes charge of the operation.

In charge

The technician acknowledged and accepted the operation on their mobile device.

The technician arrives on site and starts the work.

Running

The field technician reported their arrival on site and started the intervention.

The technician finalizes the task and registers an outcome.

Closed

The technician successfully finalized the operation and registered a final outcome, like "Meter replaced".

No further action required for this operation.

To reschedule

The activity was not completed successfully and has a partial outcome.

The operation returns to the scheduling flow for a future intervention.

Understand exception statuses

An operation may also be assigned one of the following statuses by the planner (manually or via external request) outside of the standard execution lifecycle:

Status

Description

Blocked

The operation is temporarily unavailable for scheduling or execution.

Canceled

The operation has been voided and should not be performed.

Work order statuses

Because a WO’s status combines that statuses of its operations, its progress depends on how those operations are completed and accounted for.

WO status

Condition

To reschedule

The WO consists of a single operation that was only partially accounted for and must be rescheduled.

Partially accounted

If managed as an order: The WO has multiple operations, and some were only partially accounted for and they have a partial outcome.

If managed by operation: The WO has multiple operations that are either partially accounted for, or successfully completed but don’t have specific accounting details. For example, they have unavailable material or manpower accounting.

Technically closed

All operations within the WO have been successfully completed and fully accounted for.

Closed

The WO has passed “Technical closure” and has reached its final administrative closure state.
