Use Case 2: Asset Search

Objective: Enable the efficient and precise location of linear assets and related services for field service management, including the use of geographic searches, keyword searches, and the integration of street view for in-depth analysis of asset positions.

Primary Actors: Field Service Personnel, GIS Analysts.

Preconditions:

  • The system is populated with up-to-date data on linear assets and services.

Main Flow:

  1. Geographic Searches:

    • Geocoding: Users can input specific addresses or coordinates to locate assets on the map.

    • Asset Identification on Point: Clicking or tapping on a map point reveals detailed information about any asset located at that point.

  2. Keyword Searches:

    • Service Opening: Users can search for assets associated with specific services by entering relevant keywords.

    • Asset Visualization: Assets can be visualized on the map based on keyword searches, providing immediate spatial context.

    • Geographic Area Restriction: The search can be narrowed down to a specific geographic area currently in view or authorized for the user, enhancing search relevance.

  3. Integration with Street View:

    • Users can analyze the asset's location using street view for a ground-level perspective, aiding in planning field activities or verifying asset conditions.

Example Scenario: A field service technician needs to locate a gas pipeline or regasification unit for maintenance work. The technician uses the GIS system to:

  • Enter the name or code of the asset in the search bar.

  • Refine the search to the geographic area of interest.

  • Identify the asset on the map and analyze its exact location and surrounding area using street view.

Postconditions:

  • The user has successfully located the asset and gathered all necessary information to proceed with field activities.

  • The system has recorded the search and visualization activities for reporting and future reference.

Benefits:

  • The product provides accurate, comprehensive, and easily accessible information on assets, enhancing field service planning and execution.

  • Integration with street view offers a realistic understanding of the asset's environment, facilitating more informed decision-making.

This use case outlines the process of utilizing advanced search and visualization capabilities within a GIS to efficiently locate and analyze linear assets for field service management, ensuring that field personnel have all the necessary tools for effective task execution.
