ArcGIS Online

  • A cloud-based Geographic Information System (GIS) platform.

  • Enables users to create, share, and analyze spatial data through interactive maps, apps, and dashboards. 

  • Supports cloud data storage, spatial analysis, and real-time collaboration.

ArcGIS Enterprise

  • A self-hosted GIS platform for on-premises or private cloud deployment. 

  • Offers full control over GIS infrastructure.

  • Supports advanced spatial analysis, big data processing, and enterprise-level security.

Location Platform

  • A developer-focused platform.

  • Offers location-based services (LBS) via APIs and SDKs. 

  • Provides geospatial services, tools, and APIs for integrating location intelligence into applications.

  • Can have pay-as-you-go pricing.

ESRI Licensing Models

ESRI offers various licensing models based on how users access and deploy ArcGIS software.

  • Named User License

    • Required for ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise.

    • Access is assigned to specific individuals.

  • Subscription-Based Licensing

    • Common for ArcGIS Online.

    • Users pay for access based on usage and required functionality (like geocoding services).

User types in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise

In ArcGIS Online and Enterprise, users are assigned user types, which determine their level of access to GIS tools.

User type

Description

GIS Professional

  • This is for GIS analysts using ArcGIS Pro. 

  • Use advanced geoprocessing and editing tools.

  • There are Basic, Standard, and Advanced levels.

Creator

  • This is a basic model.

  • Create, analyze, and manage spatial data.

Editor

  • This is for simple editing.

  • Update, edit, and manage GIS data.

  • You can't create new maps or layers. 

Viewer

  • This is for simple visualization.

  • Only view shared content.

  • You can’t edit or create maps. 

Field Worker

  • For ArcGIS users who need offline capability.

  • Collects and updates data in the field using apps (like ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123).

  • Works offline with map download and sync capabilities. 

Developer

  • This is for users who build GIS apps with Esri's APIs and SDKs.

Roles in ArcGIS Online and Enterprise

Within an organization, roles give users specific permissions based on their responsibilities.

  • Administrator: Has full control over the organization and manages users, licenses, security settings, and data.

  • Publisher: Creates, analyzes, and shares maps and layers.

  • User (Creator/Editor): Works with data, creates maps (if permitted), and performs specific tasks

  • Viewer: Restricted to viewing content only.

  • Custom Roles: Organizations can create tailored roles with specific permissions.
