Understand and configure field aliases

Audience: Administrators

Display custom field names for data exposed by GeoSmartOperation instead of technical names from the source system.

Understand field aliases

GeoSmartOperation data originates from operational systems that use technical column names (for example, wo_identifier). These names are meaningful to the system, but rarely to map users.

An alias is the user-facing display name for a field. Define an alias once in the layer configuration to display it across all user interfaces, including feature info panels and attribute tables.

This behavior aligns with standard ArcGIS feature services, ensuring a consistent user experience between GeoSmartOperation layers and standard GIS layers.

Define an alias for a field

Associate a technical field name with a preferred display name in the layer configuration. For example, display "wo_identifier" as "Work Order ID" without altering the source system.

Aliases only change the display label. They do not rename the field in the source data or affect database queries.

Fallback for fields without an alias

Aliases are optional. If a field has no alias, the system displays its technical name. Aliases apply consistently across all data formats served to the map.

What's next

  • To learn more about how aliases travel with the data whatever format it is served in, so users see the same labels regardless of how the map retrieved the features, see GeoSmartOperation.

  • To configure GIS layers, see Configure GIS layers.
