Monitor tasks

Audience: Administrators

Understand how to monitor and manage asynchronous tasks and scheduled jobs generated by NextGen Geo configurations, such as bulk work order imports, exports, synchronizations, and background calculations.

Prerequisites

Before you start:

  • Ensure you have administrative access to the Control Panel to view and manage background tasks.

Understand task monitoring

Task Monitoring provides a centralized status view for background tasks and scheduled jobs running outside your immediate request.

Key concepts:

  • Asynchronous task: A background job triggered by a configuration, API call, or scheduler (for example, importing work orders into a Field Execution module).

  • Scheduled job: A recurring or one-off task configured to run automatically at defined intervals.

  • Run context: The configuration, module, and user or system identity that started the task.

  • Page: A block of processed records. Large datasets (such as work order imports) are split into sequential pages and processed one at a time.

What you can do in Task Monitoring

  • View all tasks and scheduled jobs with their status and progress.

  • Filter tasks by type, initiator (user or system), and status.

  • Follow the progress of a running import page by page.

  • Stop a running import and resume an interrupted task.

  • Review summary reports for finished imports.

Understand page-based work order imports

Work order imports process datasets in sequential pages, executing each page in its own transaction from oldest record to newest record:

  • Progress is preserved: Every completed page is saved immediately. Failures on a subsequent page do not roll back previously imported pages.

  • Bad records do not block the import: Individual records that fail validation are logged in the summary report, and the import proceeds to the next record.

  • Blocking errors pause the task: Database, network, or API failures interrupt the import and leave the task in an incomplete state so you can resume it later.

  • Deterministic order: Records process chronologically, ensuring that resuming an import never skips or duplicates data.

Monitor import progress

  1. Open Task Monitoring.

  2. Locate the import task. The Status column displays the active page (for example, In Progress - Page 12).

  3. Refresh the view to update page counts as processing continues.

Progress displays in page counts rather than percentages because the total dataset volume is unknown until retrieval finishes.

Status

Meaning

Action

Not started

The task is created but has not run yet.

Wait for the trigger or start the task manually from its configuration.

In progress

The task is processing pages, and the current page displays.

Follow progress or click Stop to halt the import.

Completed

Every page processed successfully.

Review the summary report. Triggering the task again does not restart it.

Completed with failed pages

The task processed the full dataset, but specific records or pages failed.

Review the summary report to identify failed records.

Interrupted by error

A blocking technical error stopped the task. Completed pages are saved.

Resolve the underlying error, then resume the import.

Cancelled

An administrator manually stopped the task. The active page rolled back, but previous pages are saved.

Resume the import when ready.

Field Execution modules react directly to these statuses. While an import is in progress, the module opens in read-only mode. If an import fails, the module remains inaccessible. See Field Execution module.

Review a summary report

  1. In Task Monitoring, select the finished import task.

  2. Click Summary report.

  3. Review total processed pages, failed pages, and specific error details. The report distinguishes between data validation issues and infrastructure errors.

Stop a running import

Stop an import if it consumes critical system resources or was started by mistake.

  1. In Task Monitoring, locate the target import task with the In progress status.

  2. Click Stop.

The system rolls back the current page and retains all previously completed pages. The task status updates to Cancelled, and the interruption point writes to the system log.

Resume an interrupted import

Imports that are cancelled, interrupted by errors, or stopped due to system shutdown can resume without restarting from the beginning.

When you trigger the task again:

  1. The system reads its persisted state (execution ID, status, last completed page, timestamp, and error details).

  2. Processing resumes automatically from the page immediately following the last successful page.

  3. Completed pages are skipped automatically.

Tasks with a Completed status do not restart. If the persisted state contains inconsistencies, the task stops safely and logs the error to prevent duplicate data imports.
