Audience: Administrators, GIS specialists
Understand how to use the Layer Carousel feature to automatically cycle through layers in a service or group node, creating a slideshow effect directly on the map.

Prerequisites
Before you start:
-
Ensure an administrator has enabled the Play layers action in the Table of Contents (TOC) context menu through toolbar configuration.
-
Ensure the target service or group node contains multiple sublayers.
Understand Layer Carousel
The Layer Carousel cycles through the layers of a service or group, displaying one layer at a time in sequence. It works on any service or node with sublayers and is useful for comparing time-based or chronological data (such as historical imagery or periodic updates).
Key behaviors:
-
Visibility: Only one layer is visible at a time during playback.
-
Starting point: If a layer is already selected, playback starts from that layer. If no layer is selected, playback starts from the first layer in the node.
-
Display duration: Each layer displays for 5 seconds before switching to the next layer.
-
Playback completion: When the last layer is reached, the carousel stops automatically and leaves the final layer visible. The carousel does not loop back to the beginning.
-
Progress indicator: While active, the context menu displays current progress (for example, Pause (3/11)).
Cycle layers using the carousel
-
In the Table of Contents (TOC), locate the target service or group node.
-
Click the More actions ( ⋯ ) menu next to the service or node name.
-
Click Play layers. The system starts cycling through the available layers automatically.
Pause, resume, and stop playback
To control playback during an active carousel session:
-
Pause: Open the More actions ( ⋯ ) menu and click Pause (X/Y). Playback pauses, and the currently displayed layer remains visible.
-
Resume: Open the More actions ( ⋯ ) menu and click Resume. Playback resumes from the current layer.
-
Stop: Allow playback to reach the last layer. The carousel stops automatically, leaving the last layer visible on the map.
