Create and update dashboard configurations

Audience: Administrators

This topic explains how to configure, edit, and manage dashboards using REST services, SQL tables or views, and GIS feature services as data sources.

Prerequisites

Before you start:

  • Ensure you have administrative access to the NextGen Geo administration console.

  • Ensure database connections or REST service endpoints are configured before referencing them in charts.

Understand dashboard configurations

Dashboards provide visual analytics by consuming data directly from feature services, database objects (tables and views), or external REST APIs.

Key behaviors:

  • Unified data sourcing: Feed charts securely without writing custom SQL queries.

  • Map extent sync: Optionally restrict chart data to features visible in the user's current map extent.

  • Mixed sources: Include charts from different data source types within a single dashboard module.

Create a dashboard configuration

  1. In the NextGen Geo administration console, go to Dashboard module management.

  2. Click Create new module.

  3. Configure module properties:

    • Module type: Select module_dashboard.

    • Name: Enter a descriptive name (for example, ISTAT Test or ISTAT monitor demo).

    • Tags: Select or enter administrative keywords for organization.

    • Map association: Select the target map workspace (for example, ISTAT map).

    • Opening mode: Select the display format (for example, Exclusive mode).

    • Title and description: Enter localized titles and descriptions.

  4. Click Save.

Edit a dashboard configuration

  1. In the administration console, go to Dashboard Module Management.

  2. Select an existing module and click Edit.

  3. Update configuration properties as needed.

  4. Click Save.

Chart registry reference

To view configured charts, open the dashboard module settings and select the Configuration tab. The registry table displays the following fields:

Field

Description

Chart title

The header text displayed on the user's dashboard panel.

Chart type

The visual format (Pie, Donut, Column, Column stacked, Bar, Bar stacked, or Line).

Source

The data origin type (Feature Service, SQL Table/View, or REST service).

Service

The target service connection endpoint name.

Layer name

The connected GIS layer (applies to Feature Service sources).

Source name

The target SQL object name or REST API contract target.

Actions

Inline controls to edit, clone, or delete individual charts.

Supported chart types

  • Pie: Displays relative proportions or percentages of a total.

  • Donut: Displays proportional data with a hollow center showing total value.

  • Column: Compares discrete categories vertically.

  • Column stacked: Compares vertical category totals broken down by sub-components.

  • Bar: Compares categories horizontally (best for long labels).

  • Bar stacked: Compares horizontal category totals with sub-component breakdowns.

  • Line: Displays continuous trends and metric changes over time.

Add a chart to a dashboard

  1. In your dashboard module settings, click the Configuration tab.

  2. Click Add chart.

  3. In the Chart title field, enter the display name.

  4. In the Chart type drop-down list, select a visualization format.

  5. In the Data source drop-down list, select the source type and complete the required connection fields:

    • SQL Table or View: Select a connection in Connection Name, then select the table or view in SQL Table/View. See Select SQL table or view.

    • REST service: Select an active endpoint in Service Endpoint. See Select a REST service.

    • Feature Service: Select a service in Service, then select the target layer in Layer name. See Select a feature service.

  6. Configure statistics and axis mappings:

    • X axis: Select the independent variable or category field.

    • Y axis: Select the quantitative metric field.

    • X axis label / Y axis label: Enter custom labels for the horizontal and vertical axes.

    • Series (optional): Select a field to group data into colored sub-series.

    • Main filter (optional): Enter an expression to restrict returned records.

  7. Optional: Configure extent filtering (see Filter chart data by map extent).

  8. Click Save. The wizard closes and the chart appears in the registry table.

Filter chart data by map extent

Restricting a chart by map extent filters data dynamically based on the visible map area during pan and zoom operations.

  1. In the chart configuration wizard, select the Filter by user extent checkbox.

  2. In the Extent field drop-down list, select the spatial geometry column.

  3. Click Save.

Note: Extent field is mandatory when Filter by user extent is selected. Only geometry columns display in the list. Extent filtering is processed on the back end and works with database connections, feature services, and REST services alike.

View dashboards in the workspace

  1. Log in to the NextGen Geo map workspace.

  2. In the main toolbar, click Dashboard.

  3. Select a dashboard profile to load the panel. Integrated charts update automatically:

    • Feature service charts: Render spatial layer features.

    • Database-driven charts: Display tabular or view metrics.

    • REST-driven charts: Query live backend API endpoints.
